while i’m officially obsessed with every transformation i feature, some of them are so up my alley that i wish i could teleport them into my home and make them mine. like today, i want wesley moon’s newly renovated east village kitchen, bad. moon and his partner salvatore purchased their manhattan apartment in june of 2010 and immediately gut-renovated the entire thing, paying extra attention to the kitchen. the existing kitchen didn’t properly take advantage of its 83 square feet, wasn’t suited for a cook and a baker, and most certainly did not pay homage to the building’s 1910 birth. moon changed all of that by converting the cookery into a galley and putting cabinets on three walls, allowing for two people to work in the center space freely.inspired by the kitchens of new orleans plantation homes, moon designed all of the cabinetry himself, while his meticulous contractor created it at his woodshop and then painted it on-site in a soft grey satin oil-based enamel. because moon was able to configure the cabinetry any which way he wanted, the layout accommodates a rare washer-dryer combo unit, a wolf range, and an appliance garage.
the use of rich materials is the kitchen’s crowning glory. reclaimed black and white marble graces the floor after having spent hundreds of years in a spanish convent while honed white statuary marble is used for the countertop and 3” x 18” stove backsplash. antiqued mirror adds dimensionality and reflects light from the backsplash across from the kitchen’s window and on the upper door panels of the end wall cabinets. the kitchen’s piece de resistance is its hardware. wesley and salvatore collected polished brass pulls, knobs, hinges, and cabinet latches from different vendors and had their lacquer stripped, chemically inducing the most gorgeous patina ever. wesley moon, your kitchen is beautiful, transplant it to my home?
