tuesdays with dorie

when blogger dorie understiller bought her home in mesa, arizona, it had seen better days. the previous owners had a crazy cakes renovation imagination and had wildly transformed the 1916 bungalow into a mishmash of design styles. fortunately the understiller family was able to see beyond the ugly and go back to craftsman basics.
amongst dorie’s mile long renovation list she reopened the original wraparound porch, demolished the awkward u-shaped island of a kitchen and replaced the front dormers and balcony with a single perfectly scaled gable dormer. her 2,700 square foot, 3 bed, 2 bath home is now historically and aesthetically the happiest little craftsman i ever did see.

i would especially like to thank dorie understiller of tuesdays with dorie for submitting her kick butt mesa craftsman renovation.

minneapolis makeover!

lisa ball’s client bought his 1940s minneapolis home from its original owner; and while he sensed that the interior was brimming with potential, he was especially drawn to the beautifully established neighborhood it was a part of. as a city slicker, he was interested in loft style living, with an open floor plan, large windows and modern amenities. being the miracle worker that she is, lisa gave the older home the loft makeover her client was looking for! here are just a few of the amazing changes lisa made:
  • opened up the kitchen to the living room
  • replaced the upper kitchen cabinetry with open shelving
  • refinished the existing oak floors with a darker stain
  • gutted and reconfigured the bathroom

i’d especially like to thank lisa ball of design by lisa for taking the time to send me photos of her minneapolis designs!

our home office inspriation

we've "broken ground" on our home office renovation and while its completion date is TBD (built-in cabinetry doesn't create itself overnight) it feels good to be getting down and dirty. much like our master and guest bedroom renos, we're removing the carpeting and putting down maple flooring, dry walling over the plaster, installing crown moulding and adding a fancy moulding extra (a coffered ceiling)! what i'm most excited about is the nook we're creating for a built-in desk and shelving!
our design decisions are being driven by the fact that when we're blessed with a bambino, this room will become their nursery too! we've chosen benjamin moore's creamy beige for the walls, in hopes for a bright and happy space; and pooled the photos below for inspiration. how do you like them apples?

the 2012 san francisco decorator showcase teen only hang out room

the 2012 san francisco designer showcase is open for 10 more days and you cannot pass up the opportunity to visit the mansion, if only to see emily mughannam’s neon room. designed with teenage dwellers in mind, emily’s inspiration for the space was the widely popular acronym ‘YOLO’ (you only live once). emblazoned in neon, the saying defines the room. you’ll also find heart print papered ceilings, apparatus studio’s compass chandelier, custom neon acrylic shelves, society social’s white/gold tipple trolley and so much more! emily’s reaction says it best, “it's attracting people for all the reasons that i wanted it to, it's happy, it's fun, it's innovative and refreshing.”

the 2012 san francisco decorator showcase house is located at 2020 jackson street and will be open through may 28. proceeds benefit the financial aid program at san francisco university high school. the lovely emily mughannam of em design interiors provided the goods for today’s makeover, with after photos by, helynn ospina.

the 2012 san francisco decorator showcase guest bathroom

well i’ll be. never has a before and after so literally illustrated the term, ‘from drab to fab’. raenovate regular, tineke triggs, had the honor of participating in the 2012 san francisco decorator showcase as the designer of the guest bathroom. and man alive, did she impress. the lavatory has come alive with color, texture and jazziness. lavender and brass combine to create an unexpected glamorous modern punch.
still trying to figure out what to do with mom on sunday? how about mother’s day in tineke’s bathroom at the san francisco decorator showcase?

the 2012 san francisco decorator showcase house is located at 2020 jackson street and will be open through may 28. proceeds benefit the financial aid program at san francisco university high school. the lovely tineke triggs of artistic designs for living provided the goods for today’s makeover!
